Today, I’d like to address the following questions: Why choose a compounding pharmacy? And more specifically, why Innovative Rx in Kearney, Nebraska?
During my first pharmacy experience, I worked as a pharmacy technician for a compounding pharmacy while attending undergrad. I had an idea of what compounding was but didn’t know my expectations as a technician there. After adequate training, I was less overwhelmed and intimidated. I found myself loving the work that felt like cooking and baking, but with chemicals. Coming up with the final product was so satisfying—the same as finishing the decorative frosting swirl on your seasonal cupcakes. Like baking, compounding with chemicals can be tedious. It’s not enough to mix A, B, and C ingredients, stir, pour, and bake. Ingredient choice, specifically, quality matters. Other things to consider are humidity, water content and temperature, density, technique, and final product storage. My love for baking definitely provided a connection to my interest in compounding.
In September 2019, I opened Innovative Rx Compounding Pharmacy in Kearney, Nebraska. Though starting a business can seem intimidating, I recognized the Kearney community’s need to provide unique and personalized medications. Healthcare options matter; this was an essential factor in starting Innovative Rx Compounding Pharmacy.
Medication is not a one-size-fits-all model. In many cases, one size can fit many but is not all-encompassing. Having options when it comes to medication therapy is essential. Medicine is ever-evolving, and as a compounding pharmacist, I’m always learning new concepts in the world of science. Whether it be discovering a brand new treatment or merely finding a way of using an older medication in a new way, it provides never-ending possibilities when it comes to medicine.
Compounding medicine allows me to utilize and manipulate existing chemicals into new forms of drugs to suit a patient or provider’s preference.
